LoTR is better.
Tolkien is better.

I just started reading a play called Lady Windermere’s Fan by Oscar Wilde. I have high expectations for this since I am a big fan of Mr. Wilde.

Didn't have much time that night. XD

Let me try to get your attention once more.

Taken from the back of the first book of the series.

John Flanagan author of Rangers Apprentice wrote:
The Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways, have always made him nervous. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now fifteen-year old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't yet realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And was Will is about to learn, there a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied....

Tolkien has too much allusions to Christianity in his works for my liking. And for the love of god describing everything with too much detail. But I will agree that without Tolkien WoT would not exist. He pretty much created the storyline that a lot of authors follow his layout.

I would say try Steve Erickson, I have a friend who says he blows Jordan/Tolkien out of the water. He[my friend] is doing English degree so I trust his word, he says Jordan is kind childish in the way he writes. I enjoy the world Jordan created a lot more than LoTR, but I haven't delved too far into Tolkien's other writings to properly argue the point.

I've heard Oscar Wilde is quite good though I am not a big fan of plays.

@Vanya

Dun Dun Duuuunnnn! Not so much my cup of tea, but I'd actually have to read it as it is mostly the author's writing style that makes or breaks a book for me.

I'll check em out when I'm next at Chapters.

I'm thinking I need to check out Lolita and some H.G. Wells books.

Fire and Ice by Robert Frost.

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Not only Christianity, but other religions and ancient mythologies as well (Greek if I remember correctly). I think Jordan’s writing is much more detailed that it became repetitive in latest books. Many would argue that LoTR is too short for a fantasy series, but I have became to think that it’s a pro rather than a con after reading WoT. I think I prefer Tolkien to Jordan because he leaves something more to the reader’s imagination.

I am not a big fan of plays either, but he wrote only one novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (novel amazing, movie rubbish) and I want more of him.

I know the feeling once you find an author that speaks to you, it's hard not wanting to read their entire works. I just need to go to the book store and stay out of the fantasy section.

I hate the fact that my studies and global events are keeping me in the real world and preventing me from reading a lot of fiction anymore! I am in serious need for a fantasy dose! However, I have recently started re-reading several of the books that were my favourites a couple of years ago, maybe they still are, I don't know. I think that my perception has drastically changed and I need to reassess a lot of things, especially books. Besides, I have the feeling that the time of great writers has passed away, partly because every single person nowadays wants to write and publish, not one or two, but several books! It kinda bothers me as I think it offends writing itself and it's keeping me away from modern day literature.

I recommend, I am Legend. It is quite different that the Will Smith movie version and I enjoyed it immensely. It is quite short and was written in the 50's I believe, so some of the trappings of the book are of that periods thinking.

Still I recommend it fully.

I was wondering who those "two" are before I looked and realized it was me. I don't know why I posted here really, probably before I saw the new one in town.

Also, they're kinda the same -_-
