really? i find it depressing, many people take its teachings out of context and use it as a way to discriminate. I've found it being used for many disgusting reasons such as oppressing women, attacking gays, starting wars, hating another race, scamming people and threatening the poor.

Jesus would be ashamed of religion today.
follow Jesus, not the bible.

I'm going to have to disagree. The bible's far from being one of the best books. The Discworld series and Lord of the Rings beat it 6/7 days of the week. They're easier to believe as well, in my opinion.
Fuuny fact: My entire family is Christian, thus meaning that I was brought up as a Christian and actually believed what the bible said was true until 8 years ago where I actually had a serious look at it. It's no more believable than the story behind Scientology, only you don't have to spend quite as much money.

got you beat, my mother is a preacher at a Christian Church, i was raised Christian my whole life. in the last 4 years ive turned into what you would call a "semi-athiest" as in i don't care if there is an afterlife, and if there is a god, it isin't manipulating the current world to some plan.

i believe in god in more of a metaphysical sense. i believe that god made something come from nothing, but didn't want the entirety of existence to rely on god's magic, so god put into place Physics and Science to govern the rules of existence.

and what i mean by "i dont care about the afterlife" is that i truely dont care. i will try to live my life in this world with as much kindess and good as i can do. if i am wrong and heaven only allows pure-blood christians (or muslums, or Jewish, or whatever religion you are) and im refused due to my beliefs, i can decend to hell knowing that God is not a just god, but a cruel god.

essentially, if i am destined to hell for something as stupid as not believing exactly a certain way then * it. ill be a smug * in hell knowing that if i had a second chance, i would do it all the same.

Both my parents are Methodist preachers. My dad used to be the Methodist equivalent of Vicar (Super Intendent Minister) until he retired a couple of years ago. He still preaches most Sundays though. Razz

Because people were far more superstitious back then. If a preacher told them they'd go to hell unless they went to church every Sunday then they'd believe it. As a matter of fact, they did believe it which is why it was at it's peak in the middle ages. Rolling Eyes

I've never understood all the different sects and the fact that sometimes they hate other sects isn't it the same religion basically.

...is this going to ge to the point where you guys are just making things up...?

...anyways, I found the bible to be too self countradictory if applied to the views of rights and wrongs taught in church today...which is another reason why I don't go there...
