Well, most of the battle stances in Final Fantasy are not only ridiculous, but very ineffective.
By -STYLE- I would have to say I am quite fond of Paine's battle stance.

youre right about the ineffectiveness part, thats why i like half of them...
auron could at any moment chop his own head off because of the way he holds his sword, squall could very easily break his finger by he way he holds the gunblade, and beatrix, no matter how cool she looks, could possibly stab herself in the face if she raises her sword at the wrong moment...
paines trainer mode is pretty cool, and i like how seifer holds his gunblade, too.

Yeah, one thing cool about Seifer's battle stance. Like the fencing style. I think the worst is Wakka's, don't really know what he's doing but he seems like wiping his mouth often during the battle...

I so wish Beatrix would have a swinging accident.
But it doesn't stop there.
Supposedly, Irvine is a "sharpshooter", a "sniper", which implies he uses a Sniper Rifle. What he carries resembles a Shotgun more than a Sniper Rifle. So why the hell is he a "sharpshooter"? And who in their right mind would fight at such a close range with a Sniper Rifle? Wait, which "Sharpshooter" in their right mind would EVER fight at such a close range?
Tidus. First of all. Who picks up a Broad Sword like that? Call it what you want, but the sword's class is always related to the body size, and every sword that Tidus can use is AT LEAST 2/3 of his size. But it isn't enough to have it hold like that, he circles it around like an idiot during the whole fight, and he JUMPS with it to attack.
How about Cloud? And Sephiroth? Not only is it humanly impossible to wield a sword like Masamune in an effective way, he does it in an impossible speed. And Cloud?
A lot of people say that sword is a "Zanbatou", and say that a Zanbatou is a huge broad sword (very much like the Buster Sword), looking like an eku (an oar). This is a common mistake that nerds believe because it is said so in Rurouni Kenshin. A Zanbatou is, in fact, a regular Katana stacked inside a Spear-handle, very much like a Naginata. It was, in fact, used to cut down horses, as it's very name implies "horse-slaying sword", but it is nowhere near the size of Buster Sword. The closest thing to either Buster Sword or Masamune is an Odachi, a Katana-like sword used primarily in Cavalry, as much as the spear. But it is STILL nowhere near the size of the Masamune.

Bad ass? Sorry man, I have to dissagree. The way he holds the Gunblade is ridiculous. There is no possible offence maneuver except for a thrust, and thrusts are not only stupidly easy to dodge, if they miss, they'll leave your whole body unguarded.
He could also decide to bring the blade backwards and swing it afterwards, but the weight of a sword like a Gunblade doing that would not be appropriate. The one second he were to bring the Gunblade over his, say, left shoulder to slash, he would have left his entire right side wide open for an attack. Plus, it'd cut down 50% of his view, leaving him with peripheral vision if he had positioned himself in a strong enough way for the following strike to matter. This would reduce his battle performance harshly.
He could also try the very "movie'ish" full body rotation + swing. I'm not even going to comment on that.
He could also try to slash vertically, downwards. From the way a Gunblade is held, taking into account the weight of the very weapon, and a missed strike, he would mostly likely break his trigger finger if the sword hit the ground, and/or break it.
And let us not forget. It is always extremely necessary to strike from various sides and somewhat twist your techniques to fit your opponent's weaknesses. He holds the sword with his right hand, holding it's blade paralel to the ground, it's edge pointing outwards, also to the right. This limits his slashing options by a lot. There would be no chance that he would ever deliver a slash from left to right. A vertical slash would be a double-edged sword if not timed well, or having bad luck in the finishing aspect. A standard left-to-right slash would take way too long on account of the weight of the sword. There's always the trusty uppercut, but that also would require a lot of momentum, but he would have to lower it first.
To be honest, I would have to vouche 100x more for Squall's stance than Seifer's.
