Basically there are people arguing that the ref, Stephane Auger, made some "weak" penalty calls during a tie game with only 4 minutes left. Alexandre Burrow's arguement was that during the "pre-game warm up", Auger scated up to him and threatened to call more penalties on him because Burrows apparently made him "look bad" in another game in the past.
My opinion:
In the previous game on saturday, the other team (Calgary)'s player ran right into Vancouver's goaltender during overtime. There were different referees in that game and they explained to the Vancouver coach that there was no penalty on the play because they were not going to "decide a game over a 'goalie interference' call".
In this game however, the outcome was decided by questionable late penalties as Nashville scored on their late opportunity.
Although I disagreed with the penalties late in the game, the real issue is with the possible case of an official threatening a player. Burrows calimed that Auger said to him that he's going to "get back" at him for making him look back before.
I think we can all agree that most sports have had and will continue to have suck ass referees. Bad calls will never be gone, only reduced.
On the issue of the official threatening the player...well, it isn't unusual. IMO, things can get pretty heated in a game and I believe that anyone involved, even a referee, can become violent with enough prodding.
Take for example that rumble between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers in 2004. (NBA)
Before, during, after, they're all related to the sport right? Things can get pretty personal.
Even outside the world of sports, altercations like these can be seen everyday because of simple things.
Oh and I have to review this story again. Didn't catch some of the parts. Pretty interesting IMO.
