i know what you mean. Sad

it takes a while to get going but when you are able to pick your own party which is around chapter 10 i think it starts getting way better especially chapters 11 to 13

so try to bear it until the later chapters when the battles get better

i would probably be playing on mine but my ps3 is broken Mad

Yes the game totally sucks until Chapter 11 just hang in there Smile Chapters 1 - 10 are like one big long intro similar to the 30 minute intros for every other FF game. I guess they wanted to kill time to make the game seem longer/more content since it really starts on Chapter 11.

You are not the only one.

I don’t own PS3 or Xbox 360 and I am not going to anytime soon for several reasons. I am not very motivated to play the game anyway following my unremarkable experience with FFXII. The graphics are obviously highly developed and that’s yet another reason for the lack of motivation. I have this idea that FFXIII is nothing more than just a pretty face. However, it’s difficult not to want to at least try it when the game and posters of it are everywhere I go and they are screaming “FINAL FANTASY!”. I am sure I will eventually give it a shot, just not anytime soon.

So, since you already own the game, just keep playing it for the sake of the whole series.

@ Lara: I happened to like FFXII, ok I did not finish it because I couldn't make heads or tails of the story but the battle mode was good. Having said that FFXIII is nothing like 12. Nothing like it at all (in comparative terms for final fantasy games). The battle mode is completely different, the story is extremely linear, and the characters are very interesting. (almost the opposite of 12, since I don't really like the battle mode in 13). I thought that they didn't do nearly enough with the characters in 12 so you were forced to make up your own version of the characters away from the bland story.

But it is a very pretty face. To be honest it doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy (if you can ignore the swordplay) which I think is a good thing since I think the ancient style with magical powers was getting a bit old.

@ Sirensparx: You aren't the only one, I'm still only 9 chapters in and have lost interest numerous times because it just kept feeling like you're grinding forward on this linear path for no reason. At least in FFX it felt like you wanted to move forward. One of the main reasons for me feeling like that is because you die so easily and swiftly in this game. Think I mentioned to the others about how one of the flying motorbikes can kill you in ONE MOVE unless you turn into a sentinel in time.

I got around 17 hours into it myself, and just put the controller down. as of today i picked it back up, and plowed thru another 8 or so hours. and i have to say its starting to grow on me. the story especially. Especially the scene with Sazh and Vanille and how they ended up getting caught. Square really threw a curve ball at me there.

All in all, its almost everything i love about FF, and nothing i hate. no overworld map with random encounters, no magic points to constantly worry about, all around one of my favorite!

edit: I have come to really tire of the just a few things with this game, mainly the battle mechanics. i miss the old school FF..

Yes, chapters 1 - 10 are extremely linear, repetitive, boring. I almost took the game back at that point (since I rented it first before buying). However I kept going and once I reached chapter 11 it transformed into a real FF game. When you reach chapter 11 you get to explore a huge area, go where you want to go, take on side quests, just like any other good FF game and with amazing graphics, new weapons, features, abilities, etc. Remember you do not have to fight every enemy, just try to run past as many as possible to speed through the sucky levels.

How many chapters there are anyway?

It better has like 20-something chapters if it only becomes interesting by the end of chapter 10.

It seems to me, from what you guys are saying; that FFXIII is very similar to FFVIII. Linear in the beginning and then it opens up once you finish about 80% of the storyline. But does it have many side-quests?! At least few interesting ones?

I can easily say I am also one of those who have lost interest in the game. Must be twice or something like that; the first time around I only left the game for about 1½ day or so and then went back to playing. I'm in Chapter 12, but right now I'm playing more PES09 than FFXIII. Laughing

I agree with a lot of what both FuN and Stappy said. The game is very linear in the beginning, but I found it easier to accept because the story, the battle system and the (main) characters are great in my opinion!

My biggest grudge with the game is the poor, poor handling of the antagonists... rarely have I been so disappointed by SE's use of villains!

Yeah running past enemies can be fun but at some stages I was annoyed by the constant grinding and difficult battles. Especially one where some guys in these jet pack suits were flying around and would sometimes be impossible to avoid.
I wasn't suggesting that linearity was a con of the game, it was just that the game felt like you were being forced to do what the game wanted.

I should say one MASSIVE plus in this game is that your party is completely healed after every battle.

I actually stopped playing this for a long time, just played a little bit last night but nothing major. I beat GOW3 which came out after FFXIII...

I don't quite care for the story or the characters much. Not like I did with FF Tactics or FFX or FFVII (I guess)

@Stappy

The only way I see it as a plus is that you can fight mutple enemies and not worry about how much potions you have.... I liked the micro management of an true jRPGs!
