Alienware
I just placed in my order for an over $1500(US) laptop from Alienware. It's really nice, but I'm no computer expert. All I know is some basic stuff that I need in a computer for gaming, like a good graphics card and 2 GB Memory. My laptop is the Alienware Area 51 m5790. I upgraded the memory to 2 GB, got the Razor Copperhead Precision Gaming Mouse, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and it has the ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 graphics card, the ATI company's third best(i plan to upgrade it anyway).
I just want to know from the computer savvy if this a good computer or not.

alienware makes the best computers without a doubt. 2 gigs of hard drive space isn't that much, especially if you're useing it for gaming. I'd recommend getting an external hard drive maybe to help with the space. Make sure it has at least 512 mb of RAM or it will be really slow.

I think he bought it with 2GB RAM memory, not disk space. Anyway, the external drive is a good idea with laptops, they usually have half the disk space than desktop PCs.
Nice computer you bought yourself fletch

im sorry, but any computer you pay $7000 for at alienware, i can build for around $4000.
when you buy alienware, you are buying the brandname and case.
im actually going to get that challenge soon, my friend is going to pay me $3500 for a new comptuer setup, and i have to manage both the Hardware, software, and my own cut for spending my time researching the parts.
im sure that for $3500, i will build a computer that is very damn close to that $7000 computer you are looking at
hell ill do the challenge right now, ill find their most expensive computer, and see what it would cost me to build the exact same thing Custom.
-will update for challenge-
damn, i AM good, the Alienware system that costs $7407 (Area-51)

and on Newegg, the VERY SAME PARTS (or as close as i could get them)
$4,624.86 shipping included.
i would probably charge about $5,200 for the system though. i generally scale up my costs when the computer costs more.
i will say though that the Alienware system has watercooling and the custom one does not, this is due to my lack of knowledge in setting up Watercooling and which brand/watercooling system is the best. if somone ordered a watercooling system from me though i would probably spend a few hours researching it to find out which one to buy (again, why i charge more for more expensive systems, it involves research and more time)
i will add one point though:
Alienware will have 1 year customer service
i have only E-mail customer service, but generally my warranty lasts just as long or longer. mainly because MY warranty, is the Manufacturers warranty. so your RAM has lifetime warranty as long as you dont destroy them yourself.
OH and i should add i dont load comptuers with crap, so you dont have like 30 trials of Norton on the computer. and that neither build included a monitor.

aye, like i said, Alienware overcharges, you are paying for the Case and the brand name. (and i was about $1000 off in my predictions, it was $4600, but it scales down fairly quickly if you dont need the absolute best as it costs a ton * more and has diminishing returns in performance)
another computer brand that does this is Sony. but even they dont overcharge as much as Alienware.
custom building PC's is always a good idea if the computer will cost more than $1000.
just make sure you know what you are doing, if you dont, take some Hardware classes OR consitering hiring somone that does know what they are doing. Because if you damage the hardware due to lack of knowledge, your warranty for that part is done with. (as is your warranty is with each part and its manufacturer, so if something goes wrong, you need to know how to find out which part is bad so you can get it replaced)
its also sometimes a good idea to have a friend (like me) to ask advice on when buying parts. like i would say that at this moment, it is NOT a good idea to buy a Core 2 Quad with dual nVidia 8800GTX video cards.
Because in a couple of months ATi will launch their DirectX10 video card line Radeon HD 2900 (actual name, just announced today) and Intel is planning on shipping a new smaller, much faster processor that really will make Quad Core amazing (again this one will be like October, while the video card will be this summer sometime) with the launch of BOTH of these new pieces of hardware will drive down costs of ALL current hardware. meaning that within a month or two, this $4600 system can be had for maybe $4000
OH and i would recommend getting the Radeon HD 2900 becuase it has HDMI out.. a first for a video card. so you can buy a 1080p TV, plug up your 360, PS3, and your PC to it and bask in its brilliance (hey, you would almost have enough to buy a 1080p TV with the money i just saved you. or a 30" Dell monitor with 4x the resolution of 1080p. unfortunately it doesn't have HDMI yet.)

DAM!
After several days of trying to get in touch with Alienware to no avail, I finally got through, just to find out they have no more of the computer I want and are not planning on getting it again. this is both good and bad news.
Bad News:I don't get the laptop I want or any laptop in the near future
Good News:I am getting the next step up on alienware laptops from what I was going to get and I get a HUGE discount
This shows how terrible customer service is both good and bad.
BTW: If you want to check out the new laptop I am getting, it is the Alienware Aurora m9700

It's bad customer service because it took my Dad 3 days to get through to someone(6 hours per day while he was working)
