| Hey I have a question thats bugging me. It's for anyone with an answer. I'm a big fan of FFVII, and I like to think I know quite a bit. But something that has annoys me is that for the longest time, I thought when I saw people on the net refer to her as Aerith, that it was just some idiot that couldn't type to save their life. But lately I've seen it more, and was thinking. Is that perhaps her name in the Japanese version? Or possibly a name she is called by in later games involving her, like the ever horrid Kingdom hearts series? Any light shed on this would be amazing. Thank you. |
---haha...kingdom hearts does suck...<lol>

Aerith is her original name that the creator gave her. i dont know if her being called differently in final fantasy 7 was a mistake but they decided to go with her original game in all the other final fantasy 7 related games.

I personally prefer Aeris, and will keep calling her that, either way.

Well... I'm a Japanese student, and I happen to know this very well! Aerith is the first version that actually came out. That's what the Japanese had in their minds when they gave her the name. However, the Japanese people cannot say "th". In their langauge, "Aerith" is spelled like this (in romanji): Aerisu. So in the American version, when the producers were speaking to the American translators about the game, to them, "Aerith", sounded much like "Aeris". Since the Japanese also have a habit of making their "u"s sound kind of non-existent. Hopefully that answers your question! It was just a mistranslation is all.

heres how it went from beginning to end. The original letter for letter translation of the japanese name is Aerith. The correct phonetic translation is Aeris
This means that if you say to a Japanese person "Aeris" they will know who you mean. This is becasue the japanese pronounce -th sounds as -ss sounds. They don't actually have a sound for -th and none of their words are said in this way.
The only reason it was changed back for Kingdom Hearts etc is because idiotic fan boys who didn't understand this blew up enough stink on forums and so BANG! they change it.
The true name is Aeris. That is how the japanese say it, that is how it was originally written and spoken over here so, by logical conclusion, majority rules and the true spelling is Aeris

Lets for two seconds consider what you have said not only to be true but also the correct sequence of events.
If we consider this then we must recognise that Sephiroth in Romanji would be spelt Sephirosu. And, since japanese pronounciation causes the -u to be replaced with an -s, then it is also true that by a japanese person it would be pronounced as sephiross, backed up by the japanese version of Advent Children.
If all this is true, which it is, we then must ask the question why when the translators spoke with the translators did they not change the spelling of Sephiroth the same way they did with Aeris. The only answer could be that they didn't change it by mistake but on purpose.
Then we see that there is another question that must be asked if we assume that there was indeed a mistake. This is that if a 16 year old student who could not have been learning japanese for more than two years could understand and notice that the pronounciation differs from the spelling, then how could translators, who have made learning and understanding the japanese language their job and have probably done so for 20 or30 years, not recognise this mistake?
Do you hear that sound? Its the sound of your defeat!

It's not really a mistake per se. And by the way, I don't like that you're trying to argue with me, seeing as you're saying exactly what I was. "th" is "su" in Japanese. That's all there is to it. Apparently, Americans like "Aeris" better. Just liked they like "Case Closed" better than "Detective Conan".
It's a mistake in my brain, because I played it with my Japanese uncle first, and have always pronounced it "Aerith". I've been hearing Japanese all my life, and though I can't speak it fluently, I'm not one to mess with when it comes to pronounciation.
The bottom line is: neither of us is wrong. So try to be less rude about it please. I wasn't trying to argue with you at all. I was just handing the information that I had to another person.
