advise would be much appreciated
My laptop is getting older older these days and what it can handle makes me sad. im looking into getting a desktop computer but clearly beuilding one yourself is the way to go.
any sites ppl could throw my way in terms of the whole "how to" asspect would be good, also sites in which to by the parts.
i know thor knows all about this stuff and im sure a bunch more ppl do as well, so advise would rock.
thanks in advance fellow forumers.
P.S. im not trying to go above and beyond with it, im just looking for something thats reliable, has a good lifespan, and is fast enough to make me smile. so think middle fo the road parts i suppose. but any advice will do.
p.p.s if you can recommend a site with good prices i would go with that as well considering i am lazy as most of you know.

www.newegg.com
very dirt cheap parts. the only time i have ever seen a part cheaper is on www.buy.com which supprised the crap out of me.
so check out www.newegg.com and www.techbargains.com (it encompases the prices for a very VERY large selection of online realitors)
as for building your system. you have to answer a few questions:
1: What is my budget?
2: do i need a monitor? (and if so, do i want a widescreen?)
3: Do i need speakers?
4: Do i need a keyboard and mouse?
5: How many gigs do i really need?
if you are looking for a monitor as well, i recommend Dell for just the way the screen looks (i own a dell 2007 20"widescreen.. amazing, i want the 24in now.)
i also recomend LG for their LCD's. which have byfar the best specs of any of the monitors. they arent cheap, but they are the best quality. (1400:1 contrast! 4ms Response times!)
a good idea for a motherboard and CPU is to go to a Fry's or PC club and buy a combo package on one. i recommend a dual-core anything, just having a dual-core kicks ass. and its not really that expensive anymore.
as for parts, you said you want a middle-of-the-road PC. i would look toward a GeForce 7600GS, its middle of the road and around $100, if you want better gaming performance go for the 7600GT, yes, one letter is a world of difference (around 20% to 30% faster) just make sure to find out if your motherboard has a PCI-E slot or an AGP slot before you buy this part.
all motherboards come with a built-in sound card, so you don't need a sound card unless you are an audiophile and just have to have the best sounding music (then spring for an X-Fi sound card, about $90 but man they are delicious)
Hard drives are easy, just figure out how much space you need and you got it, whichever motherboard you get, it will most likely have a SATA port, so look for an SATA hard drive, there is little performance difference between SATA150 and SATA300 (ala, no difference at all. the discs don't spin fast enough to use the full bandwidth)
i dont know how much you know about computer building so i kinda just started at the bottom and worked the way up.
if you do have any questions reply, and if you need a faster response, take a look at www.tomshardware.com they have some great advice on how to put computers together and which parts to get.

the fun part is choosing a case.
take a look at Newegg.com, they have a good listing of parts and an easy way to sift through them to find the ones you want.
ideally the case you want will look awesome, and come with a good power supply, 550w will be more than plenty, and even support you if you ever decide to do SLI with your video cards.
I'm not entirely sure how much you are expecting to pay for a new computer, if you are looking for a truly budget computer, its actually best and cheaper to buy a pre-built one. anything costing over $600 in parts though is best to get custom built just because it is more durable and customizable. around the same price, but still you get more features.
anything over $1000 you start saving money buy custom building.

Yup Thor pretty much covered everything. Newegg is the way to go. I used to use www.pricewatch.com but you cannot trust a lot of the shops and newegg has the fastest service and good prices. Heck I order something from Newegg every week whenever something new comes out.
