Is everyone also aware of the "Homeroom" idea? At the beginning of school, everyone aound a certain agegroup meets in the same room for a bit before going off on their sperate classes. This will really help in your characters meeting each other and interacting without the awkward "somehow everyone shares the same math and english classes."
