Its good if you want a cheap PS3. Personally id go for the 60GB if I was in America because it has proper backwards compatibility still and its only $500 and some stores seem to be throwing in games with it.
Here in the UK the 40GB is £300 and the 60GB is £350 but has 2 games and an extra control so the 60GB is the much better option.
I think it is a bad marketing tool. For everybody who bought the $600 and it breaks, there is no alternative. Your stuck with the 40G either way. You can just kind of think of it as Sony keeping 100 of your hard earned dollars.
ur not stuck with a 40...mine broke and they still make 60s and 80s but they make 40s so they can lower the price so more ppl who cant afford 60s and 80s can buy those
They are going to stop making those 60G $500 ones. IF you watched the gaming news, you would know that they announced the stop of production of the 60G's.
The 40 GB model has been out in PAL regions for a month now and (in Aus anyway) they are no longer stocking the 60GB model. I'm thinking abou getting one after my exams but I think the price down here is too high, $700. The US dollar - Aus dollar exchange is a lot closer so I don't know why we're getting ripped off. lol
($400 USD = $447 AUD -.-)

What you see is all they have left,Sony officially announced a while ago that what they had in their warehouses was the last of he 60's. They probably haven't sold yet though, because nobody really wants a PS3 at this point.
Why is Sony always so slow when they first release a console? PS2 took a little while before it was officially a good system. The PSP is still doing bad after over a year or two(don't really keep track). The PS3 is still having almost no luck, and it has almost been out for a year now.

I think its a combination of a strategy thats previously worked and because there consoles are always so hard to code to begin with. Its not so bad as a gamer though because the console then gets better the longer you own it, and because of being hard to code the console peaks at the end of its life cycle, look at PS2 it had games like God of War 2, FF12, KH2 at the end of its life cycle and the PS1 had FF9. Games that really pushed the system so late on and its great as a gamer because it removes the need to an extent to get a next gen console straight away be that Sonys consoles or its competitors.
The only thing is that the PS2 is still going. It's so good still, and the systems are still selling so well, that they would be stupid to stop production.
The GC had nothing really going with a lot of people, so I think Nintendo was right to break off the GC when they launched the Wii.
Same goes with the Xbox.
And the system can't be that hard to code, look how many people can just hack it and do what they want to it.
The being hard to code came at the start of the PS2's life. It had ports of Dreamcast games that were better on the Dreamcast. Same thing as we have now with the 360 VS the PS3.
Now I think the PS2 is very easy to code for because developers are so used to it. As the PS2 is now also still going well Sony doesent have to worry about the PS3 sales so much as the PS2 still has the most gamers. Now I think its Sonys time to shine with the PS3 this Christmas as some of thier established games come out like Ratchet and Clank along with new games such as Uncharted Fortune and its now that PS2 gamers will start to move on.
I like the price especially since warehouse 20GB PS3's sell for more than that with a lesser value. I also like the fact that sony is expanding the memory range of the PS3 and not confining it to just a couple selections.
