Beta Testing
man havent done this in like.... well since January.
i just got an invite to a new Closed Beta test, should be fun.
it has an NDA.. so i wont tell you what it is, but i will tell you this:
It has robots.
Anyway anyone else beta test some games? ive so far beta tested (Not in order):
Earth and Beyond (Closed)
Planetside (Closed)
Final Fantasy XI (PS2 Closed)
Everquest online adventures (PS2 Closed, man this game sucked)
World of warcraft (Closed, Phase 1)
Dungeons and Dragons Online (Closed)
Matrix Online (Closed)
The Saga of Ryzom (Closed)
Final Fantasy XI (Xbox 360 Open)
Ragnarok Online (Open)
City of Heroes (Open)
Guild Wars (Open)
Everquest 2 (Open)
Starwars Galexies (Open)
Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst (Open)
Lineage 2 (Open)
Dungeons and Dragons online (Open as well, i got 2 accounts =)
im also leaving out a few games.. mainly because even though i played them, i just either: Totally forgot them, im ashamed to be associated with them, or i just dont count it a true beta.
If you dont know what the difference between open and closed is.
Closed: you have to be invited, usually a longer period of testing and your input is valued much more (oddly enough the closer to release, the more the developers ignore the beta testers)
[/b]Open:[/b] You can get in if you apply, 100% guaranteed, sometimes you can get into Open by buying a product, for instance many new MMO's are letting people get into open beta if they preorder the game.
Phases Sometimes when a beta is going to last a long time, and you want to have some beta testers, but have more and more after each development stage, you have "Phases" each phase lets in more people to play and test the game. the earlier the Phase the more prestiegious. For instance, the only Game on my list with a Phase is WoW, this is because they actually TOLD me what phase i was in, and how many phases there was:
In World of warcraft there were: 12 Phases (around, cant exactly remember)
in Phase 1 there was only 1,000 people.
In Alpha there were about 150 people
in the last phase there were a little over 100,000 people, then Open came and it zoomed up to about 300,000

if you know somone in the Biz you can usually get in Alpha, which comes before Beta and Alpha testers have a MUCH more impact on the development of the game.
To get in Closed Beta you need to either:
-Sign up on their site
-Be part of a Beta Program
for example. Fileplanet has possibly THE BEST beta testing center... you can get into closed beta's left and right. the downside, is that you gotta pay (like $5 a month or something) for a full Fileplanet subscription.
a key to get into a beta, is to keep a heads up on upcoming MMO games (most often every MMO game has a beta, many non-MMO games dont have a beta program available to the public. of all the games ive beta tested, ive only beta tested 2 non-MMO's) when you hear of a new MMO you just find the official website and look for a beta test application.
you can also use a few other websites that have a news post of games that have an open beta test, have some closed beta sign-ups, or are coming close to getting into beta:
the program im thinking of is on Gamespot (its free dont worry, but you still have to sign up, you arent just given the game like you would on fileplanet)
(looks at Gamespot) hrm, well they DID have a beta program, it was a little tab called "Beta test center"

I've only Beta tested one game, it was years ago and I can barely remember the name. It was an open beta, though, with lots and lots and lots of people.
