R4 and Flash Carts for the DS

Basically, a flash cart is the best thing that could ever be bought for the DS. For any who have modded a PSP, it is like putting new firmware on the DS, but far easier.

For those who don't know how it works:

The flash carts don't really do much themselves except act as the vessel that allows your DS to read the MicroSD card used as the memory unit. You can usually use a MicroSD card of nearly any size, though limitations with size exist with pretty much every flash cart you can get. The MicroSD card stores absolutely everything though, from the firmware to the games and the saves. You just have to plug your MicroSD card into the computer and simply drag and drop the properly downloaded software into the root of the card. After that, it is as simple as getting ROMS and throwing them onto the root of the MicroSD card.

Personally, I use an original R4 because of the fact that I didn't know there were other flash carts out there that could support a MicroSD of more than 2 gigs. 2gb is plenty though really. Using a file that comes with the firmware, or by downloading an updated one, you pretty much have all the AR cheats for every game. I don't use them unless they are a game fix code required to make the game work (those anti-piracy checks in the code can be a pain).

When starting the game for the first time, you are given the option to create a SAV file. This is basically what stores all the game data. It stores save files in the game and everything. They are pretty small files too, in the kb's.

All I can say is, this is the greatest thing I've ever spent about $15 total on ($4 for the R4 plus $4 shipping, it was a deal at the time on iOffer), and $7 for the 2gb MicroSD card. I currently have about 15 or so games sitting on it was about a gig of space still available.

Also, these things can play music, support pretty much every setting on the DS, and you can get emulators (NES, SNES, Sega Genesis) for the Slot 1. Though, from what I've read, I need to get the Slot 2 device for the R4 to get the really good emulators that run very solidly.

Does anybody else here own a DS flash cart? The best part is, the flash cart can support files from pretty much any part of the world. I currently have the Japanese version of Chrono Trigger (it has full English, and the American version had anti-piracy checks that were a bit more solid) and it runs like a dream with no issues. Very Happy

All I can say is; Yay for flash carts!

All my friends have flash carts except for me.

I'm quite picky with videogames and I mostly prefer them to be legit than pirated. My damn thinking costs me a whole lot of money though. xD

I have one too. It's fantastic and anyone who owns a DS should get one. They are cheap and reliable from my experience.
