If you like RTS (Real Time Strategy) games you should check this out:

This is an online science fiction MM(massive multiplayer)RTS game with HUGE amounts of possibilities and its completely free.
You can chose between four races: Humanoids, silicoids, plasmaoids and insectoids.
You start out on your own planet in your own system and build up your economy until the point where you can build your own ships.
You must also see to that you have a respectable mining operation and a decent power output.
When you get to the point where you can build your own ships you can either focus on building up a military fleet or a Trade fleet or you can make a mix of both.
You must also research technologies.
But enough talk, time to check it out for yourselves.

ah, its that kind of game.
well, im sure thats all well and good, but a game rather similar and proplem with less problems would be http://www.archspace.org/ its the same kind of game and its been up a lot longer. may not be as user friendly but eh.
