Hangover of the Heart
I awoke today, my heart in bliss
I knew nothing that could have been amiss.
But when I saw the fruit of the day before,
It was cruel, heartless and so much more,
My heart awoke from its old state,
For in my self did I overappreciate,
And was I drunken with pride in the heart.
Oh but the agony of such heart's awake
to see what I had done,
And for my own poor heart's sake
Into myself did I run.
To see who I was and who to be
To change myself and to be free
From the wretched hate
That had gripped me.
Oh, but though the pain is strong
I carry on,
And thank the one who was bold,
Who told the truth and awoke me
From my sins of old.
But for his sake,
I hope he will not take,
My thanks so readily.
Or believe that I am changed
Or that I have re-arranged
My heartstrings.
For if I am forgiven too soon,
It means he trusts too much,
And would to any goon,
Believe by mere words.
But the words I speak I hope
Help me not at all,
And that only by works,
That vale of distrust fall.
But also I wish that I care not
What others think of me
Of how I am in their eyes
Of how I seem to be
But that instead,
I lift my head,
And notice but the truth,
In the end the other's matter not
I am who I answer to.
Would I have approved
If I told myself such rot?
Would I have agreed
With that dark blot?
But my heart was drunken with pride and vanity...
The things I hate, I did for fun.
Now I know I have some work to do.
But I wish my sin, I had never done.
