You need a Broad Band internet and to send messages you have to give your Friend Code to someone else and visa versa. Once you both have registered each other and gone back online then you can start sending messages to one another.

After sending 7 you can start doing some of the side quests including the one that gives you the Onion Knight. Or you can do what I did and get an Action Replay and find a code that gives you 99 sent messages and you'll never have to connect to Wi-Fi.

Did that help any?

You have to be near a wireless router which allows Wi-Fi play.
