The story for VIII was nowhere near as good as VII...or IX. If I want to go into detail then it's not as good as III, IV, or V's storylines either.
As for graphics, they help a game in the same way a drink helps food go down, but they aren't that necessary to make a truly great game. Just look at Chrono Trigger for example.

Agreed. VII is the first FF I've completed and it's storyline is probably the best out of the entire FF franchise. The only games Square have made which can come close to rivaling it's storyline are Chrono Trigger and Lost Odyssey, the latter proving that Square haven't quite lost their originality yet.
