Everyone seems to be forgetting that this is "Which FF game had the best graphics FOR IT'S TIME", not which one has the best graphics overall. If it was then we'd all know that would be FF IV for SNES. Laughing

well, if it is for the best graphics of its time, I would have to lean towards FFIX, simply for the FMV sequences. It showed what FFVII and FFVIII should have looked like. Also, FFX had good graphics, maybe even better than FFXII's, but that's because of it being one of the first fullscale RPGs for the PS2, so Square had to work extra hard to make sure they didn't fall behind; everything else they've done after that seems pretty lackluster, as far as regular gameplay.

There's barely a difference between the FMVs through VII-IX...

Well, there is a bit of difference (they are a bit more.... realistic(i couldnt think of a word!)) but its not really something that you can say is a vast improvement in graphics. Compare 'the landing' FMV in ffviii to the opening of ffix

FFVIII had some good fmvs, but the overall background graphics made it...
weird. Especially when compared to the character's sprites, which were pretty, y'know, bad. Of course, FFIX's char sprites weren't that good either, but they were much more distinguishable from the background, and didn't look so glitchy all the time.

My vote is for FF VIII you all seem to forget that it had the first real improvement in graphics in all of Final Fantasy History. 7 May have started the ball rolling with its videos, but it's 8 that pushed its console to its limits. I've seen very little if any improvement sense it. 9 may have had the extra scenes but they didn't show off true graphics to me. plus in half the video's you would see queen brahne... I'm sorry but that is the wrong time to show graphics that broad should have a censor screen over her. Anything before may have been good for its time 8 has the best graphics overall on 10 and 12 it was only the new system that made them as good looking as 8. 11 in my opinion shouldn't be on specifically for the reason that its played on the most versatile and individualized system ever made which makes a single persons view count for very little as its largely dependent on a video card and ram to stop it from crashing.

nah FF8 had cutting edge graphics specs for its age, but it wasn't the smoothest, the best drawn graphics, the developers were still new at drawing with those kinds of graphics so they did a pretty good job but not nearly has good has it could have been.

If its best graphics specs for their time its FF8 surely. And I know thats what this thread's about so you are right in the end, But I dont like to praise a game for its graphic specs but rather for how well drawn those graphics are. So Id go with either FF7 or X if I were trying to praise their graphics.

But yhea in the end I think it was FF8 the one that had the newest graphics for its time, it was on the news at one time.

Either that or FF7. (originally I thought it was FF7)

As I said at the top, people missed the "for it's time" part. The graphics in FF X were average for the time. It was FF VII which had great graphics for it's time. Rolling Eyes

Undoubtlty Final Fantasy VII, to me. Final Fantasy X graphics were very standard for the PS2, and honestly, could've be taken even further, whereas if FFVII had been taken further at the time it came out, it'd probably die a lot like FFXII.

Final Fantasy IX was also a great game graphic-wise for the Playstation. If you ask me, the game was very well made in what regards to graphics for the PS.

What do you have against FF XII? It's only just under halfway in terms of FF games. It's actually started to become quite good at the point I've reached, although I still dislike the battle system.

Where to begin?

I've actually written a whole list of things I dislike about Final Fantasy XII in a sarcastic, comic and overly rude manner, and agree or not, they all make sense.

It can be found here.

I advise you to not hold anything against me if you get to read the thing. It can be quite offensive.

But to answer your question directly, I said what I did about Final Fantasy XII here because it is true. Final Fantasy XII's system makes Playstation 2's die a lot during multiple casting, like having every character wait in turns before they cast and end up all dead - something that does not happen when casting minor spells such as Protect/Shell, away from the lag-presence that is Monsters.
