The thing is, for us they have great powers, for us, link is powerfull with all his abilities and weapons, Cloud too, and we all know now that he's the most powerfull warrior in the universe ( if im not wrong ). But there are people who havent played or seen FF7, they dont KNOW ANYTHING about FF, so they hear from other people who have played FF7 saying * o look Cloud this Cloud that... he is sooo powerfull * and stuff... so the results, ( oh no this guy is better and stuff ) they start a discussion about whos better. They ( Judge other things ) without knowing anything about it.
Every hero is powerfull in its own game and the most powerfull in his universe ( maybe )

I think the winner of the fight between the two would depend on many different factors. Normaly I would say Cloud hands down. What level/abilites does each one have? What weapon does Cloud have? Does Link have the tri-force? Who's wearing what for armor?
I think if you were to bare-bones them, no magic/equipment/abilities, than Cloud would win, but who would want to watch a bunch of level 1 weaklings duke it out?
