I have to buy a PS3 now

i remember a post a made awhile back saying this:
"If the PS3 ever impliments Folding@home into the console so that it can be widely used by everyone, i will buy a PS3"

guess what? with the 1.6 patch that came out, they implemented this feature.

so to make it so that my word has some value, i will buy a PS3.
it wont be anytime soon, simply because i do not have any money (or a job) at the moment. but i guarantee you that within 2 years i will be a playstation owner because of this single feature.

What is Folding@home?
simply put, it is a program that analyzes atom structures of diseases and cancer cells looking for ways to cure it.
what i can describe is not nearly close to what it actually does:
http://folding.stanford.edu/

i joined the program about 2 years ago when i thought i had a cancerous mole on my back. it turns out i didn't have cancer, but i still help.

heck, take a look at already how much the console has helped the research. with the combined power of the gamers it is already outpreforming windows, mac AND linux PC's combined by almost double:
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=osstats

also, when you take into consideration, that the Cell processor was NOT designed to play games, but rather for medical research, this program makes allot of sense, the whole console itself is built for folding, and this is what it excels at. in fact, the PS3 may even DOUBLE the folding performance of the 360, maybe even triple it. considering how folding doesn't apply to games though this really isn't too much of a statement on the power of the consoles, but rather what they were designed for.

proof exists in my link above showing the Tflops provided. 30 thousand PS3's provided over 3 times the TFLOP Preformance of 160 thousand PC's
mathematically, that means that each PS3 does as much folding as 16.7 PC's

so if you have a PS3, please get this patch, and then leave your console on overnight. sure your power bill might take a little spike, but if you cant do it for the human race, do it for this thought:

Imagine Jack Thompson's face when it is discovered that video games cured cancer.

now where the hell am i going to get $600?

I have heard nothing about this. This sound really interesting. I am going to have to look over the links when I get a chance. Who would have ever thought of a gaming console doing this type of thing? Not me.

Oh, so they finally got that running, did they? Hah, it would almost be worth getting one to see Thompson's expression.

well... i hate to be the bringer of bad news, but it seems sony found a way (potentially) to turn this way of helping people into putting more money in their pockets.: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158649
i dont know if its true but it sure sounds like sony and there are some "official" quotes. sad that sony cant just leave things as they are instead of squeezing money out of it

After reading that some of the things mentioned may be a good thing like helping Pharmacy companies. Sony benefits but atleast new medicines may be found which could be helpful. If Sony rewards us with something like free downloads I don't think its that bad. I suppose it all depends what the commercial companies want to use the folds for.

yeah granted it has benifites, but i just disslike how sony has to turn every good deed they may do into a money making oportunity. i suppppose id do the same if i owned a huge company, but being as i dont i like to wag my finger at them.

eh, i guess it doesnt matter.

I think Sony may need every bit of money they can get at the moment with the losses their taking on the PS3. $200 dollars a console their losing at the moment I think.

They are a company though and they have to do all they can to make money. Almost any other company would probably do the same thing in this position. At the end of the day though we do have a choice if we want to contribute to their gains through the folding at home. Id do it for the cancer cure but to help them commercially id probably just turn the PS3 off and save on the electric.

well; the loss on the console is to be expected these days i think. 360 lost money on each unit sold... although i think the wii was pretty even. as in they didnt lose much if any money on each unit.

but yeah, obviously helping science along is rewarding and id do it. id prolly be more inclinded to do it with other projects if there was some incentive.

my question, directed at thor bc he would know more than i, why havent people done a similar thing to the 'folding at home' on there computers all these years?

Isn't folding at home on PC's aswell. I think the reason its been done on PS3 is because the Cell is a better processor than the type in a PC for this type of work. I could be wrong though.

aye i found the story on Digg...

* SONY

they take a great, and KIND idea, something that actually makes them look good and then they FREAKING F**K IT IN THE BUTTHOLE.

sure you may say "oh, but gamers can still do F@H"
sure they can, but they wont, because they would rather spend their idle CPU powers to get free swag rather than cure cancer.

*spits on sony*
i have to say that i am going to break my verbal contract on buying a PS3. this little turn of events has put them even FARTHER into the negative for me. at this point in time i want to do physical harm to sony.

give me a gun and some C4, i'm taking a plane to Japan.

F@H started on the PC many years ago, i stated above that i used it when i thought i had cancer.. (turned out i diden't, but i run it anyway) i was happy that sony added the effort of the PS3 onto probably the best way to cure cancer yet, and then they decide to offer the opportunity to sell out and have the gamers sell out as well to major drug (or minor drug, or any commercial company with supercomputer needs) with the idea to get free Swag in return.

no, what this means is that there will be a new program that will let sony SELL YOUR CPU CYCLES ON YOUR PS3 FOR MONEY TO COMPANIES. to make people actually do it, they will offer swag (swag= pens, points, small rewards, in this case just enough to keep you doing the program for said swag)

why would you help cure cancer when if you earn up 400 SSP (Sony Swag Points, also known as Sony Sellout Points) you can get a PS3 T-Shirt for free (you just pay shipping) and by earning those 400 SSP, sony has earned around $30 off of your PS3. netting them (T-shirt: $10) $20 profit.

Why would you help cure cancer when you can get a $20 gift card to Walgreens by spending 600 SSP

ahem... to say again F**K SONY!
