Think that that there has to be a good balance between the open ended style and structure. I don't necissarily like playing games where everything seams so scripted that all you are doing is just clicking through endless text until you get to the next important battle. However, I get annoyed when you get to points of a game where you have absolutly no direction as to where to go next ether and are able to move onto the next stage of the story because you blindly happen upon the next step as you wander aimlessly. As enveloping as a world can be developers need to realize that there is still a disconnect between the characters in a game and the player, because the player dosn't live in the world of the game, and what might make perfect sense to a character who is a resident of the game world dosn't necessairly translate to real world common sense. I had a big issue with this in a game like Chrono Cross, when it came time to jump back and forth between the various planes of existence in that game. It got to be so confusing. Thank god for the folks at Brady Games and gamefaqs.com for providing great walk throughs for these games.

I disagree with most of the reasons that have been stated.
1. Seiy, I feel that you're using Haine as an example of a graphics over gameplay/story type of person and in some way I disagree. I believe there's a fine line between a gamer who likes pretty things and a gamer who just shuns 2d no matter how pretty it is in favor of 3d and they're the ones I believe, modern FF is targeted into. Alot of mainstream gamers nowadays just have a twisted version of pretty and it's most likely backed up by the next gen system hype.
2. Thor, I doubt there can ever be a 2d FF but there may very well be a 2d Square rpg. In the words of a user: FF is Square's cash cow. When their other games or movies fail at selling, they go back to the roots of FF and cater it to the current mainstream because as long as FF is pretty and it has a mediocre gameplay and story, it will sell.
3. I don't believe that it's impossible to make an open ended rpg, it's just that most of the mainstream fans, don't really care. In history, the most an open ended rpg ever achieved is cult status. As for the pre-modern FFs, they were also linear except they use a system that catered to most of the fans at that time. Most big time devs just don't find the idea of tampering with their successful franchises "wise" because it might lower sales. They do that wth all their other side franchises.
4. I disagree with Gust also, there's alot of stories that are untapped. Hell you can still squeeze out an original story from RpG Maker games and these aren't as great writers or developers as some of the big names one.
5. I also disagree with Fun. To me it's more about progressive than ironic. Early on, games had little advertisements and so so reasons that caused it to be a cult genre. When the boom of games happened, it became more about money making instead of just creating a great game. Left and right, devs would cater to grabbing alot of gamers instead of just making a great game. So the more "open" structure of the games were left to the small time devs while the big time devs were cashing in with sub par titles until other companies step up to the challenge. On the other hand, the number of old school gamers/nostalgia gamers also didn't decrease and rather increase but because the buzz is mostly about next gen, these type of gamers and games weren't talked as much anymore so it does seem ironic that alot of good games were dissed but when you look at the marketing strategies like the Nintendo Rev being able to play old games or the cult status of a number of people playing with emulators and even the number of people online who compete in high scores old school games, then really it isn't because alot of people didn't want to play games back in the day, it's just that there were less mainstream games to play with so it's rare to hear alot of people playing a single game. Also because internet wasn't a household item yet, we really based our judgements on mags and the people around us which is limited to a certain culture and country so it really does seem that very few people indeed played games.
Also the "geek" name calling is something I haven't experienced and it might be limited more to a certain country and culture.

well i believe haines idea of good graphics are things that look realistic. I know how you feel about ppl and their thoughts on 2d games (like the classic ff's) and i think those were better in a lot of ways than any ff after 7. graphically, i like something that isnt real, but stands out. much like me enjoying ICO or the new game by the same ppl shadow of the colossus. i enjoy art, and those two games are indeed art in my mind. you could take any snapshoot and make it a desktop bg bc the whole game is beautiful. anyway... i got off track. i enjoy 2-d games just as much (if not more) then the regular gamer out there. games like ff classics, contra (a personal fav), and way back for the computer (way back for me) scorched earth. scorched wasnt much to look at but it was indeed amazing.

Scorched earth huh... I might try it one day.
I still say Haine's definition of pretty is something like the special looking colorful items here on Final Funender/KH/Threads of Fate/Tales series and not something along the lines of Halo/HL-2/CS Source where she gets wowed by the realistic world.
