Black Dawn

Okies. The intro was written a while ago, and I just found it again and added to it. I'm not sure if I'll continue on with it, as it seems a very... dull idea.
AND BY THE WAY, the beginning is very... crappy. I was trying to shove all my explanations of my character and it just made it really... cluttered.
Anyways...

Excerpt from Jinx's diary.

January 1, 2121

I endured the supposedly apocalyptic war of the angels and demons that lasted for over a century in our modern world and turned it into a fantasy. If you like, I can tell you the story. It’s full of evil and hatred, with a few unexpected twists that may appear to be breath-takingly exciting, but are actually so horrifying that they steal your breath away. I was one of the few who actually took part in the war and did not cower in fear at the wrath of the supernatural; for that, I am proud. My part in the war was greater than anyone else’s. I had to sacrifice up the life I knew for everyone else. It still pains me to think back on it and wonder what I would feel if I were still human.
-End entry-

It was winter; January 1, 2000. The start of a new millennium would unfold with terror, starting with good old California. Thick, heavy snowflakes drifted down from a grey sky so dark that it almost seemed black. The field across the road from my apartment was already enveloped in a soft blanket of snow and Jinx wished that she could go over to play in it. However, she had to keep up the reputation of an emotionless killer and couldn’t be seem romping around the snow.
Jinx was what people called “a drifter”; the type that owes no particular loyalty to any one gang, but can still choose one to follow. No drug dealing or being a courier between gangs for her. Oh no, she was much too good for that. She specialized in assassinations of specific people that the boss would request. Of course, she could choose not to do it, but it could give a pretty good wage if she killed a person every time the boss asked.
Sighing, Jinx turned away from the window and walked over to my kitchen, reaching inside the refrigerator for a bottle of Bawls Guarana, a highly energizing drink with 2 times more caffeine than coffee. She had a job today and wanted to bring my energy levels back to normal after last night’s drinking spree. Although it doesn’t seem like Bawls was a very professional method of waking up, she liked to do things her own way.
Jinx went into her bedroom to change into a set of rugged clothes that were a bit torn up from extensive use. A loose black shirt, Pale whitish-grey pants, a jacket the same colors as the pants and boots, which looked heavy but were actually rather light were hastily thrown on. A black and white headband was tied on in an attempt to keep the thick black hair out of her face as black biking gloves were pulled smoothly on. Jinx was ready.
Pushing the down button for the elevator, Jinx waited. The time it took for the elevator to come up to her floor usually lasted 12 seconds, but today, it was much slower as it came down from above. Frowning, Jinx stepped into the metal box, which everyone thought, was safe. This was a kink in her daily routine, but it didn’t matter as long as she got down without the electricity deciding to stop.

The elevator arrived on the ground floor in exactly 12 seconds and Jinx stepped out. She walked past the sleeping security guard. She didn’t blame him for taking some timeout, it was 7 AM and he had been on this shift since last night. Stepping out into the crisp air, Jinx located her motorcycle among the pile of huge lumbering cars parked around. Hopping lightly onto the seat, she started it and revved up the engine, pulling out of the parking lot while pulling the visor on her over her face to protect it from the snow. Her target was a killing this time. Everyday at exactly 7:30 AM, a man by the name of Sid Jarley would be exiting his house to go to his company. Jinx had to get there and get rid of the target quickly and without too much fuss.
At 7:20 AM, Jinx was perfectly positioned on the roof of the mansion beside Jarley’s. In her hand was a sniper rifle she had modified herself. Looking through the 2x scope at the mansion, she could see movement through the windows and for those ten minutes, continued watching carefully. Just as her legs began to ache from crouching in the same damp spot while snow slowly built on her back Jarley stepped out the huge oaken double doors, Jinx flicked the scope to 10x and carefully aimed, waiting for the chauffeur opening the door for Jarley to get out the way. Once he did, she would have barely a second to shoot while Jarley entered the car.
There was a quick pik sound as the tiny ball of metal that could cause so much destruction escaped the barrel and lodged itself into Jarley’s left temple. Almost immediately, there was the loud crash of something grand and expensive smashing against a hard floor and the front door was flung open. The chauffeur was yelling and shaking Jarley while the people who had rushed out of the mansion either stood around wailing or panicked. One of them dialed a number, it was probably 911, and Jinx could see his mouth moving rapidly through her scope. A few minutes later, the high pitched wail of sirens could be heard and Jinx slowly slid down the same pole she had climbed up. The sky was still rather dark so no one saw her.
An ambulance and several cruisers had arrived. The paramedics hastened to Jarley’s side, but it was obvious that it was too late. It had been too late the moment Jarley had offended Robert “Chief” Miller, the head of one of the most vicious mafia gangs in the U.S. Jinx was his friend and often did jobs for him. For a moment, her mind flashed back to the day when Jarley visited Rob and they had ended up in a brawl.
Jarley entered the dimly lit room quickly, almost stumbling over the rich carpet in his rush to shake Rob’s outstretched hand. “Sit down,” Rob said in what his friends had dubbed “The Business Voice”. Jarley sat on the very edge of one of the soft armchairs and mopped his forehead with an already damp handkerchief. Jinx stood behind Rob, blending into the caressing shadows. It was amazing how she could blend so well with such light-colored clothes. It’s all in where you stand, Jinx remembered explaining to people.
“It is to my knowledge that you have a business proposition for me?” Rob asked.
Jarley nodded nervously and began in a strained voice, “Yes. This is an extremely good opportunity for both of us-.”
Rob cut him off with a flick of his hand, “How do you know it would be a good opportunity for me?”
Eyes wide open, Jarley stammered something to the effect of, “I just thought…wondering…I didn’t, but it seemed…”
Sighing, Rob stopped him again, “Stop muttering and keep talking.”
With a confused look, Jarley started to sweat even more and even began to stutter as he gave his deal. “Simple put… um.., the shipments of crystalline meth that you receive would be turned over to us and-and…you will get-I mean would get 100 000 from us.”
“Was that supposed to be a fair deal?” Rob asked, raising an eyebrow,
“N-no. I mean YES.”

“Well if it was, then I’m afraid you need to refine it a bit. I won’t tell you how. This isn’t your first time out is it Jarley? Learn how to be confident, learn how to make better deals, learn how to stop groveling, then come and find me. Your appointment is over now, if you like, you can make another one with one of my members.”
Rob looked down at the book he had been previously reading and ignored Jarley’s broken excuses. When Rob resolutely concentrated on his book and gave no notice to Jarley, he yelled, “You coward! You can’t even look up at me because you know that you can’t make a deal with better people!”
It wasn’t a very well formed insult as insults go, but it had its effect. Rob hated being called a coward. He took a deep breath, marked his page with a slip of yellow paper and put the book down on the coffee table in front of him. He stood up and leaned towards Jarley. “Want to say that again?”
Jarley visibly blanched in the faint lights and shouted, “YOU’RE A COWARD!”
It wasn’t possible, but Jinx swore that she felt the previously silent room become even quieter. The members of the mafia stood there, holding their breath like Jinx while the tension slowly built. Rob gritted his teeth and swung his fist towards Jarley without warning. It smacked into the side of Jarley’s head and he stumbled backwards, flailing like a madman to regain his balance; but before he could do so, Rob was on top of him, pummeling and kicking him. Jarley was a surprisingly trained fighter and retaliated viciously.
The only warning was the slight glint of as Jarley shifted around and reached into his pocket to grab a switchblade. He slashed the air between him and Rob, who immediately jumped backwards, panting heavily, his eyes filled with uncharacteristic anger. “Stay back,” Jarley said shakily.
Rob breathed out, using his pathetic yoga skills in an attempt to calm himself. His logical mind convinced his angry side that it wasn’t worth it and Rob retreated into his armchair. “Get out,” he snarled.
Jarley gladly complied, scurrying like a rat out through the door, leaving it open in his haste to get away. “Jinx,” Rob growled, “take care of him.”
Jinx smiled and nodded, a strange flash in her eyes.

The flash of red and blue lights whirled across the street and Jinx was jarred back into the present. She grabbed onto the grappling rope she had hooked on earlier and slid down, her gloves protecting her from any burn. The sound of an engine starting was blocked out of Mrs. Jarley’s world as she sobbed her heart out onto her husband’s pure white shirt. It was 7:45 AM
Jinx stared at the sky. Even though it was winter, it should be starting to get light now, yet the heavens stubbornly remained dark gray. Shrugging, Jinx turned her motorcycle to a place that she always went to after she had taken a life. The church.

Jinx was a Christian. Obviously not the best one, but she still believed in God and always asked for his forgiveness after a ‘job’ was completed. However, when she arrived at St. John Lutheran Church, she saw so shocked that she sat petrified on her seat, the church looked like it had been broken down, hastily rebuilt, and smashed again. Wooden boards and splinters littered the packed dirt path that supposedly led to the doors of the church. The frame that held the door was still standing, but the walls had crumbled inwards and it didn’t look too steady. Slowly inching forward on her bike, Jinx gasped and almost began to cry when she saw the marble white altar split in perfect halves through the middle. On closer examination, the surface was charred and black with soot and dust.
There was a clatter nearby and Jinx whirled around to see a shape disappearing as the chalice dropped to the floor. Immediately, Jinx tugged her sidearm out of her belt and held it in front of her. “Who’s there?” she called out.
Nothing answered her for a moment, then a high pitched giggle drifted out from behind a fallen pillar. It slowly grew louder until it gnawed and nibbled at Jinx’s sanity, wearing it away until she could stand it no longer. “STOP IT!” she screamed, covering her ears in an attempt to block out the sound.
To her surprise, it stopped. Jinx raised her head from the protective shield of her arm and opened her eyes. Directly in front of her was a pair of blood red eyes that held a malice and hatred so great, Jinx recoiled and curled into a ball. She heard the rasp of scales brushing each other and an ice-cold finger touched her cheek. The thing laughed at her fear and hissed, “Human…you are so weak. I have heard that your type was not powerful but I never thought that you would already submit to such an easy form of pain to resist.”
If it had been a human speaking to her, he would be dead right now, but the problem was that this was a freaking monster. What was she supposed to do? None of the rules self-defense seemed to apply at this moment. Her usually quick mind could think of nothing to do, so she stayed down. The fear she felt seemed to suffocate her while a hand drew her away from the brink of consciousness. Suddenly, all that was wiped away as a soft golden light illuminated the emptiness inside her and filled her with hope once more.
Jinx peered out through a crack in her arms and saw a beautiful woman step among the ruins. Her gaze flicked over Jinx dismissively, then focused on the thing that had now retreated. “You cannot hope to win this war, angel,” it said.
An angel? Jinx thought to herself. This can’t be happening. None of this is real. Angels and demons don’t arrive on the earth. They stay where they’re supposed to stay.
The demon laughed, “We can come up when we want to, little human. Do not underestimate our powers.”
Had the demon heard her thoughts? It was impossible. It wasn’t happening. It was impossib-
“Be quiet!” the demon roared and picked her up by her collar, throwing her at least twenty feet away. The demon stood directly in front of the angel with a challenge in his cold, red eyes. Frowning delicately, the angel said, “The anger of the masters turn the skies black. When will their fury end?”
The demon smirked and said, “Their wrath has turned uncontrollable. Watch out. It had already begun.”
It was 8AM

Later on that day, Jinx sat in her apartment. She was still trying to convince herself that everything after Jarley’s death had been a dream. That none of it was real, and at any moment she would find herself collapsed on a couch in Rob’s headquarters, asleep.
She sat on the dull yellow couch she had put in the main room in an attempt to ‘brighten things up’. Needless to say, it hadn’t done so well in the plain little apartment. Jinx’s thoughts were scrambled up as she ran through the entire day over again. Jinx had been trained to adapt to her situation and learn to accept things, but this, this she could not accept. Not even in her wildest, craziest, worst dreams would she have imagined this. Her cell phone rang, startling her out of her reverie. The caller ID said that it was Rob, but she didn’t feel like talking to anyone right now, so she sent him a busy signal. A few seconds later, her phone rang insistently again. Annoyed, Jinx pressed the answer button and shouted, “Can’t you just leave me alone, Rob?”
But the voice that drifted through the tiny speaker didn’t belong to Rob. It was Jarley’s. “I’m coming back for you. Just wait until I tell everyone who you really are.”
With that cryptic message, the phone clicked and the line went dead. Jinx just sat there with the phone pressed to her ear, her brain not processing the information. At another time, she would have thrown the call off her as a prank, but now, she could believe just about anything. There’s no such thing as ghosts, there’s no such thing as ghosts, there’s no such things as ghosts. Jinx repeated this to herself over and over again while she tried to busy herself around the house, tidying up things that weren’t messy, turning off lights that weren’t on, and doing everything she normally wouldn’t have done. She couldn’t forget what had happened though and she was suddenly struck with realization. She dropped the dish she had been mindlessly wiping over and over and scrambled over to her phone tossed on a pillow. She snatched it up and looked through her calls and found the most recent one. The one from Jarley. Right there, in Arial font, in black letters, was the caller ID Rob. “*,” Jinx muttered, rubbing her eyes.

Jinx managed to make it over to Rob’s headquarters in twenty minutes, breaking all the laws for safe driving. She crashed through the front door and charged up the stairs into Rob’s study. She expected to see total and utter chaos. But it was quite the contrary. Everything was where it was supposed to be, right down to Rob sitting in his usual armchair, reading a book surrounded by his partners. “What are you doing here, Jinx?” Rob asked. But there was something different about him, his voice was cold and his eyes reflected an emptiness she had never seen. It was like there was a thin film over them that was blocking him from everything else. Jinx took an involuntary step backwards and said, “Rob… are you feeling alright?”
Rob stared at her with those icy eyes and replied, “Whatever gave you the impression that I wasn’t?
Blinking, Jinx said, “Sorry Rob… you just don’t look so well.”
“I am in perfect health, thank you very much. Now if you could excuse me, I have an appointment to attend.”
With that, Rob pushed himself out of his chair and out the door. Jinx didn’t know what had happened to him, but she didn’t like it. Whipping around, she jogged out the door and caught Rob just as he started to get into h is car. “Rob!” she called.
He turned around and regarded her loftily, “Whatever it is, Jinx, it can wait until I come back.”
Jinx shook her head and said, “Rob. You’re no alright. You didn’t even ask me if I took care of Jarley yet.”
At that, Rob’s eyes were so angry, that an astonished Jinx stepped back again from him for the second time that day. His eyes were the only thing that seemed to show emotion now; his face was void of all feelings that Jinx could normally see and interpret with ease. As quickly as the rage had come, it left and she was left with an unreadable Rob once more. “Well I was under the impression that you would be able to finish your job.”
“I did finish it. But why didn’t you ask if I did or not?”
“Look, I don’t have time for your pointless questions. My appointment is important to us, so if you don’t mind…”
Rob shoved himself through the car door and slammed it shut. Jinx couldn’t see through the heavily tinted windows and nor could she pound on the door and demand that Rob talk to her. Perhaps Rob didn’t want her around anymore. They had always been close friends, so what had happened to make Rob act this way? Jinx was too confused to think right now. Because of Rob’s strange behavior, she had completely forgotten about the events of the day. How the hell had Jarley’s voice come from Rob? Jinx’s eyes widened as a sudden thought came to her. Could it be possible that Jarley had done something to Rob?
The sky was dark. It was 10:30AM

Jinx was following Rob’s car with a heart heavy with guilt. Normally she wouldn’t do this, but today was an exception. Her thoughts turned momentarily to the war of the angels and demons. She felt stupid. Here she was, probably the only person who knew that two supernatural races were about to collide on the earth and she was off chasing Rob around.
The wind and snow felt good on her fevered forehead as she zoomed forward into the murky darkness. Finally, Rob’s car stopped at a ramshackle building, so torn up that Jinx couldn’t even see what it had been before. Rob gave an impatient wave to his followers and stalked through the crumbling doorway. Jinx scrambled off her motorcycle, turning the engine off. She went around to the back of the building and saw that the entire wall had been broken down. She stepped through the shaky frame and into the building. As she walked around, she noticed that there was one room. It was perfect. The wooden door was intact as well as all four of its walls. She stared through a crack in the door at the scene that took place inside. Rob was standing in front of a figure that was all too familiar. The demon.
“Master,” Rob said, bowing to the demon.
Jinx gasped as she saw the demon acknowledge the greeting with a wave of his hand. “Do not threaten or harm the girl again. She is important to our conquest.”
“But Master,” Rob said in a whiny, nasal tone, “I want my revenge against her.”
The demon whirled around and slapped Rob with the back of his hand, throwing him against the wall. “Never talk back to me!”
Rob struggled up and stared at the demon angrily, but bowed his head in acquiescence. “That’s better. Unless you want to end up like that, you had better follow everything I say to you.” The demon gestured to a figure huddled in the corner of the room.
Jinx almost screamed when she saw it. It was the revolting sight of a warped human boy. All the visible skin not covered by rags was bruised and cracked angrily in several places with a strange liquid that wasn’t blood oozing out of them. His hair was matted thickly with blood and whenever he looked up. His mouth was lopsided and the bottom lip was sliced in half. He slobbered with drool running down his chin and his tongue lolling out the side. His eyes were the most frightening. They were the eyes of the trapped. They carried a message from his soul to be let free of the prison that held him locked in this body. She stared at the eyes, the only sane thing in the prison.
Then an even greater surprise struck her smack in the face. There were wings on the boys back. Jinx rubbed her eyes and looked closely. Sure enough, a pair of dirty, ripped wings were strapped together behind the boy.
The demon was now saying, “You will keep a close eye on the girl and report to me everyday. Do you understand?”
Rob nodded and started for the door. Jinx shot away as fast as a bullet away from the door and out the back wall. She sat there in her motorcycle, stunned by what she had just witnessed. Why does everything happen to me? She wondered.
In this time, she could only turn to one other trusted person. She tapped a number into her cell phone and waited for the line to connect. “Hello?”
Jinx would have smiled if it hadn’t been such a grim situation. She hadn’t heard that voice in such a long time.
It was 11AM.

Five minutes later, she sat in a café with one of her all-time best friends. Jessica sat across from her, sipping a coffee. At the counter, the waitress lounged, listening to the news on the radio and looking bored. “It is a strange day in California, it is already about 11 and the sun does not seem to have risen. There have been conclusions drawn that it is only because the clouds are too thick and heavy for the sun to show through…” the reporter on the radio sounded almost as bored as the waitress looked.
“What’s wrong, Jinx?” she asked in that voice that was so soft that it always made Jinx feel better. Jinx’s hands gripped her plastic cup so hard that it began to bend inwards. Biting her lip, she began to relate the events of the day in a trembling voice, so unlike her. Jessica listened quietly, her expression unreadable. When Jinx finished, Jessica reached over to hold onto her hand. “Jinx,” she said, “You’re my best friend and I would believe everything you said if it wasn’t so preposterous. No, I know what you’re going to say. Don’t jump into one of your brilliant speeches about truth. You won’t be able to convince me this time. The idea of angels, demons, and all these other things… I just can’t accept it.”
Jinx sat there, her temper slowly rising. Here was her supposed best friend that would always support and trust her saying that she was a liar. “I thought that you would be able to help me,” Jinx snarled, “Apparently, I was mistaken.”
Jinx stood up, threw a few bills on the table to pay for her coffee and pushed angrily out the door. Jessica stared at Jinx mounting her bike helplessly, wishing with all her heart that she could really believe what Jinx had just told her.
Jinx pulled out of the parking lot heatedly, mentally cursing Jessica, Rob, Jarley, the demon, the angel, and just about everyone who moved their car in front of her. She drove back to her apartment building and on trying to open the door, found that it wouldn’t budge. She was almost prepared to fly-kick the door, but the security guard arrived on time to open it for her. “I’m so sorry about that madam. I have no idea what happened to make it automatically lock.”
Grunting an acknowledgement, Jinx shoved the guard aside, stalked over the elevator and jabbed the Up button for the elevator. The security guard followed after her, babbling excuses, obviously knowing that Jinx was a mercenary and afraid that she would take offense at him locking the door. Jinx continued to ignore him while waiting for the elevator, which was taking exceptionally long today. A hand grabbed her by the hair without warning and flung her to the ground. “It’s not polite to ignore people,” a deep voice said. A pale face glared above her eyes amid the flashing stars that were bursting open. The intense red eyes seemed to be laughing at her silently as they dared her to get up from the ground and fight. Jinx grabbed the challenge and pushed herself up off the ground. Grabbing her semi-automatic handgun, she fired at the demon.

Acting with inhuman reflexes, the demon sprung away and appeared behind her, tossing her easily to the ground once more. “Here now, I’m giving you a chance to save yourself. Try using it to your benefit,” the demon snickered.
A feral growl rasped through Jinx as she launched herself at the demon, forgetting the gun on the floor and trying to grasp his throat with her hands. Shaking his head, he spun away and grabbed her wrist, twisting it viciously before letting go. “While we’re at it, we should get to know each other more. My name’s Azael.”
Azael, Demon of War. Why would someone as important as him be sent to fight her? She didn’t have time to think as a barbed tail whipped out of nowhere and smacked her across the face. Azael laughed, “Jinx is it? Well Jinx, I thought that as a human in your position, you’d be a better fighter.”
Jinx almost screamed with frustration as Azael dodged her now clumsy attacks with ease. Clucking with disproval, he pushed her to the ground with an almost dismissive flick o his hand. Not moving, Jinx lay there, her muscles aching with exhaustion. She had never been this tired, not even when she had been running on foot from the cops.
“Weak. You’re as weak as my master said you were,” said Azael, “When you improve on your fighting, come find me and we’ll have a rematch.”
Azael disappeared in a burst of fire so hot that Jinx’s skin almost blistered. The elevator arrived and the security guard walked out of it just as Jinx pulled herself together off the ground. “’ello there Jinx,” he said cheerily, waving just as Jinx walked into the elevator, irritated at the guard for no reason. She entered her apartment to be greeted with complete chaos. Everything was either turned over, smashed, or covered with black soot. Everything had been pulled out of the refrigerator and trampled underfoot. The walls had been slashed and spider webbed with cracks. The bright yellow couch was ripped and all the stuffing pulled out and thrown around.
Her bedroom was even more of a mess if possible. The mirrors were cracked from the center, as if a fist had smashed into it. The bed was stained with something reminiscent of blood, but whose it was, she could not figure out. The bed frame was bent and warped into impossible shapes that looked like symbols. The dresser was ripped open and all her clothes flung out everywhere. But as her eyes fell on her computer, she was given a shock. Her computer was left intact along with the desk. She walked slowly towards it, questions flashing thorugh her mind. Why had they left it alone? Did they want her to use it? Why why why?
The screen came to life as Jinx wiggled the mouse and there was the picture of a clock, except it was ticking. To the right of the analog clock was a digital countdown. It read 00:10. Ten seconds to what? Jinx thought. She watched the seconds on the analog clock tick by and she gasped as she realized what it was counting down to.
Five more seconds. Jinx waited with bated breath.
3, 2, 1.
Screams erupted from underneath her window and shrieks of mirth and shouts of fury resonated across the alleyway. Jinx ran to her window to see humans caught between what were obviously angels and demons. Blood spattered across the street and several of the demons even flew up to hurl balls of fire at the angels who retaliated with streaks of focused light. As the cries grew louder and more horrible, Jinx covered her ears and sobbed. Piercing laughter that was the result of the enjoyment of death reached her and she was almost choked by the feeling of suffering. She huddled in the corner of her room in a defeated pile while the terror continued to build underneath the dark sky.

Pretty good story! I really like the plot, though I thought that it was a little abrupt when the demon and angel are first talking and then she is back in her appartment. meh maybe it;s just me.
